A natural snowmobile racing talent, Ed Schubitzke began racing at local events near his home in northern Minnesota during the winter of 1968 aboard a Ski-Doo. After more success in racing a dealer sponsored Polaris in 1969, Schubitzke was picked up by Ski-Doo pioneer Roy Halvorson for the 1970 season where he recorded impressive series of wins for the team, racing in both stock and modified classes.

With the advent of Sno-Pro in 1974, Schubitzke switched to Yamaha and continued his winning ways, finishing his first Sno-Pro season with the high-point title in the hard fought 440 pro class. Odd man out when Yamaha took a hiatus from racing in 1975, he was invited to race Mercury Sno Twisters and began racing once again as an independent, he enjoyed great success in both stock and mod classes.

After nearly a decade of continuous competition, the “Come From Behind Kid” demonstrated the depth of his talent with a breathtaking win of the World Championship Derby at Eagle River in 1976. He scored the win as an independent racer aboard a factory-supplied Yamaha liquid-cooled SRX 440. It was a season that culminated with yet another pro circuit high point championship.
